URGENT GUEST NOTICE
Kia Orana!
We want to let you know about current sea conditions so you can plan the next few days in as much comfort and safety as possible.
The Cook Islands Meteorological Service has issued Coastal Inundation and Damaging Heavy Swell Warnings for the Southern Cook Islands. Emergency Management Cook Islands has advised that a large ocean swell and high seas will affect Rarotonga from Wednesday into the weekend.
Our beachfront areas are the most exposed parts of our resorts, so as a precaution we are taking the following steps.
What we are doing:
- Guests in some ground-level rooms closest to the water are being moved to alternative accommodation elsewhere on the property as a precaution. Due to high resort occupancies, this may involve dormitory-style accommodation. Our team will contact you directly if your room is affected and help you move. Please ensure to pack all of your belongings.
- From Wednesday, all meals for all guests of both The Rarotongan and Sanctuary Rarotonga will be served as a buffet in our elevated Treetops Verandah Room, set high and well back from the water. A Daily Full Cooked Breakfast Buffet remains included in your room rate, served from 7am-10am. We will also be offering a Special Buffet Lunch ($39 adult / $19 child 3-11 years / Free 0-2 years) from 12.30pm-2.30pm and Special Buffet Dinner ($49 adult / $29 child 3-1 years / Free 0-2 years) from 5.30pm-8.30pm, Wednesday – Saturday. Our normal a la carte menus are currently suspended, and our beachfront restaurants and bars at both resorts will be closed until Saturday, or until further notice.
- All water activities are suspended from noon Wednesday until Saturday, or until further notice. Please stay off the beach and away from the water’s edge until we advise it is safe.
How you can help:
- Please follow our team’s directions at all times. If you are asked to move rooms, please pack and bring all your belongings with you.
- For your safety, please do not go onto the beach or near the water’s edge to watch or photograph the sea. In these conditions our team cannot safely come to your aid — please keep well back.
We will hold short guest updates at 8am, 12noon and 6pm each day in the Treetops Verandah Room. Our team is in close contact with the Emergency services and the Police.
If you would prefer to make alternative accommodation arrangements during this period, we will waive our cancellation fees for guests in-house as at 9 June 2026 and for arrivals up to and including Sunday 14 June 2026, across both The Rarotongan and Sanctuary resorts, all room categories.
For assistance, please contact our Reservations team at reservations@therarotongan.com or call +682-25800. Our Reception is staffed 24/7.
Thank you for your support and understanding as we navigate this challenging period.
Meitaki Ma’ata e Kia Manuia,
The Rarotongan Beach Resort and Sanctuary Rarotonga Teams
Kia Orana!
We're aware that some visitors to Rarotonga are seeing duplicate card charges appear on their bank statements for transactions made several months ago (November 2025) at a range of local businesses, including accommodation, supermarkets, fuel stations and restaurants.
We’d like to reassure our guests that:
• This is a banking processing issue, not a scam and not the result of merchants re-charging cards.
• The charges exactly match legitimate transactions previously made.
• The issue is affecting multiple banks and card providers, particularly overseas cards.
• Banks and card providers (including Wise) have acknowledged the issue and are processing refunds.
If you’re affected:
• Please contact your card-issuing bank or card provider.
• Refunds are being processed, and in many cases are automatic.
• If any fees have been incurred, banks should reverse these as part of the resolution.
We appreciate how distressing this experience can be.
Cook Islands businesses are working closely with banks to ensure this is resolved soonest possible and that confidence in electronic payments is restored.
Here below please find some additional helpful information:-
DUPLICATE CARD CHARGES? FAQ
Important Notice: Duplicate Card Charges – Banking Technical Issue
Q: Why am I seeing charges months after my visit?
A: Some transactions from November 2025 were delayed in banking settlement systems and have only now been posted. In some cases, they were duplicated during processing.
Q: Is this fraud or a scam?
A: No. Banks have confirmed this is a technical processing issue, not fraud and not merchant misconduct.
Q: Did the resort charge my card again?
A: No. Merchants did not re-process transactions. The charges are being generated at the banking level.
Q: Will I get my money back?
A: Yes. Refunds are being processed by card issuers. Some providers (e.g. Wise) are refunding automatically.
Q: Do I need to cancel my card?
A: In most cases, no. Cancelling cards can delay refunds. Please follow your bank’s advice.
Q: What should I do now?
A:
1. Contact your card issuer or bank
2. Reference “duplicate or delayed settlement”
3. Ask for fee reversals if applicable
Q: How long will refunds take?
A: Typically 3–10 business days, depending on your bank.
We hope you’ve found the information update above helpful and that it has set your mind at ease to some extent.
Please feel free to reach out to reservations@therarotongan.com should we be able to offer any further assistance at this time, and wishing you a good rest of your day.
Meitaki ma‘ata e Kia Manuia,
The Team at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Lagoonarium and Sanctuary Rarotonga-on the beach
